The CAN I/O is primarly intended as
hardware for distributed industrial
control application. It can be also used
as a standard alone controller.
The CAN interface enables CAN I/O's to
participate in real time network. Complex
control algorithms can be distributed
among several decentralized stations with
a minimum of wiring.
The core of the CAN I/O's consists on
different microcontroller (Philips 80C592
/ Siemens 80C166 with external CAN cell
and Siemsn SAB C167 CR), which has onboard
upto 512 kByte EPROM or FlashEprom.

IO Type 3
Digital I/O
The CAN IO Type 3 is a design for process control. It is a microcontoller- based module for distributed applications. The CAN IO Type 3 platform and the included sample control software allows to access and control the I/Os and adapt the platform easily to individual applications. Various high-level protocols for OSI Layer 2 up to OSI Layer 7 (e.g. CAL, CANopen, SDS) are supported by I+ME and are available as source code for the microcontroller and several CAN chips.
